Triple Check and Go

Did I lock the back door?

The question ran through Ulrika's mind again. It was the kind of worry that she tended to have after closing up the house to go on any family trip. An ordinary worry.

Yes, she told herself. You checked, remember?

Ulrika carefully filed the thought away and kept her eyes on the snowy road.

She and Stig had drawn up a checklist. Neat little points on lined paper, just to be sure they had everything. Mia had asked to help with it, and they'd decided to let her, even if it meant that the two of them would have to go over

everything she'd looked at when she was done with it, just to be sure.

Did we remember to pack Mia's homework? And her toothpaste, and extra socks, and –

Stig's parents complained the whole time – almost. But when they weren't complaining, they were slipping little things into the boxes, things she hadn't remembered, or never would have thought to pack in the first place. Heat packets.

Duct tape. Insulation for the cabin windows.

Did I turn the coffee pot off?

Deep breath. In, out, slow. Steady. Yes, Ulrika thought, you turned it off.

She remembered turning it off.

They had talked about whether they should turn other things off, too. The water. The electricity. None of them could guess how long they would be gone; it was impossible to be sure of everything. What if they were gone for a whole

month? Or the entire winter? Or longer than that?

She didn't even want to think about it. And it was better not to.

Beside her, Stig cleared his throat.

"...Honey, did we lock the back door?" he asked.

"Yes, dear. We checked."

He sighed. Relieved? That was what it sounded like.

At least she wasn't the only one worrying about silly things.

For the first time that day, Ulrika smiled.

Maybe they would be gone for longer than they'd hoped. Every scrap of news made that sound more likely.

At least they'd have a story to tell at the end of it all.
