It isn't the rain

Sakari's eyes flitted open.

He could hear something under the sound of the rain. It was very close, but he couldn't quite make out what it was. For a moment, he listened, trying to catch it again. It sounded almost like -

There was a sniff from the bedroll beside him, followed by a muffled sob.

Oh, Sakari thought.

Well.

Okay.

He chewed at his lower lip for a moment, wondering if he should say anything, or give any sign that he was awake at all. In Mika's shoes, he wouldn't be thrilled to find out that someone had been listening to him crying.

Not that it had been the same for him, exactly. The circumstances were... different.

He heard another sniff, followed by the sound of Mikael shifting a little, pressing his face into his pillow to muffle the noise.

Sakari tried to stay quiet, tried to take slow and even breaths. If he didn't give any sign that he was awake, then –

The sniffing abruptly stopped.

For a long moment, there was nothing, except for the sound of the rain falling outside.

"Sakari?"

"Hmm?"

"Sorry." A muffled sniff, followed by a long, deep, steadying breath. "Did I wake you up?"

"No," Sakari lied. He turned over a little, watching Mika's dark, curled-up shape, little more than a lump in the dim light. "Did I wake you up?"

"...No." Another deep breath, and then Mikael turned to face him. "I'm okay," he said, even though Sakari hadn't asked.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

"Good." Sakari offered him a smile, even though he was pretty sure that Mikael couldn't see it. "You should try to get some sleep. We have a lot more travelling ahead of us tomorrow."

"Right." Mikael sighed. Wiped at his eyes, as casually as if he was wiping the sleep from them, even though they both knew he wasn't. "Do you really think that all of this is going to tell us anything?"

Sakari thought for a moment. "Well, Ieva seems to think we might find out something useful."

"It might just be a waste of time."

"It might," Sakari admitted. "But we won't know for sure until we get there."

They were both quiet for a moment. Sakari closed his eyes and listened to the lulling sound of the rain falling, and Mikael's breathing, which came more easily now, less strained by the tears.

"You really don't understand how things were back home after you disappeared, do you?" Mikael said suddenly.

"Hmm... No? Well, I mean, I guess everyone might be a little bit worried, but --"

"There's more to it than that!" There was a sob in his voice again. "You've been gone for years, and – what if that means I –"

Okay, Sakari thought. This is going nowhere good; he's going to start crying again. "You said that before," he said, trying to keep his voice as comforting as possible. "But I don't know if we should talk about it right now. I mean, we're both tired, right?"

"... I guess."

Good, Sakari thought, but didn't say. It didn't sound like Mikael was in any state to explain anything properly, anyway. Especially not something that hardly made any sense. He hadn't been gone that long. "So, maybe this should wait until we get back. Veeti will definitely be awake by then. We can all go over this properly then. Right?"

A long breath. It sounded steady enough. Finally. "Okay. I guess... that's what we should do. And Veeti can tell you everything."

"Okay." He reached out in the dark to pat Mikael's shoulder. "Now, try to sleep, all right? Everything will be better in the morning."

At least, he thought, as the rain poured outside, I hope it will.
