24th's Eve: Half a world away
He was at the arena again, just as he had been the night before, watching members of his team dancing on the ice. Strange, Estonia thought, how the place had become familiar in such a short amount of time.
The skater twirled on the ice in time with the music. Estonia's eyes watched, but his mind was somewhere else.
It was the evening of the twenty-third of February, and there he was, unbelievably far from the place he knew, an ocean away from his home and his people.
The music stopped and the competitor finished. Estonia let his thoughts wander.
Tomorrow was his independence day. He wouldn't be home for it. Something inside him twisted. It wouldn't be the first time, that knowledge didn't remove the heavy feeling. For the first time since his arrival, he wished he was somewhere other than Vancouver.
He looked at his watch and realized then that it was already the twenty-fourth on the other side of the world. In fact, by that point, at home it had been the twenty-fourth for several hours.
He bit his lip and tried to shove the feeling down. It didn't change anything. Tomorrow - Vancouver's tomorrow - he would celebrate it with Finland as they had planned, and the night would end with them getting spectacularly drunk.
Suddenly the announcer's voice rang through the arena.
"The next skater, représentant de l'Estonie, representing Estonia: Elena Glebova."
The mention of his own name yanked him from his thoughts and made him look toward the ice.
He watched as Elena glided out and took her position. When the music started and she began to skate, his eyes followed her. With the jumps came applause rising through the building, cheers nearby from her team-mates, his people, mixing in among the voices of strangers. His guts twisted once again, but the feeling this time was different.
Somehow, it seemed that he wasn't so far away from home after all.
