cheerfully offering midnight walks

The window slides down
lock clicks it shut
wait a moment
just one more
then another snowball follows
voice calling up
for good measure
The window is closed
locked
he waits
bare hands in pockets
kicking at packed snow by his feet
because he knows better
The front door opens
spilling gold into the night
huffed breath fogs the air
as he stomps up the walk
neither of them says a word
