Old Magic
The going is easier on four feet
and at times we switch
take turns
running in our newfound bodies
transforming in alternate.
I can smell
what lurks silently
and can hear
what you're oblivious to
the things that follow us
the things
that would devour us whole.
I wanted to go east
turn to the rising sun
wander in the depths of the forest
let my homeland swallow us
disappear traceless into the taiga.
But strong hands pushed us
dreams sending west
the both of us, together.
At night you met a man
instructing with voice thunder-deep
pointing the way to strike.
His brother nodded agreement
all the trees in the forest dipping their heads
as he poured magic into you
giving old knowledge new to you
whispering in your ear that you must share this.
A woman filled my sleep
this fine lady with braided hair
telling me to go with love
packing my bags with good-smelling bread.
She kissed my cheeks like a mother
and sent me over her threshold
words of luck into the afternoon light
as the sun himself lit a path for me
painting the world with gold.
There is nothing to the west
but lakes and Finns
why should we go there?
But the signs are clear as untouched snow
full and promising as ripe grain
so we will go where we're told
howls filling our throats
together in our new life
rushing, warding, dashing, running,
to a place we've never known.
