Badlands
Hills sprawl out around them, streaked with bands of coal and sandstone.
The heat is more than Ukraine expected. Canada never ceases to
surprise; she didn't know he had deserts. But here they are, and the view
of the valley beneath takes her breath away.
It was worth the hike to get up here.
"It's beautiful," she says, then takes the thermos he passes to her – water,
mercifully ice-cold even after all that.
"Thanks!" He's smiling, she can hear it in his voice without even looking;
such a darling. "But this is just the start of the trail."
...Oh dear.
