Possibilities
"Come with me," Sweden had said, dipping his head low to speak it by Norway's ear, his voice hardly more than a whisper.
Norway had listened to that, rolled the thought around in his head a bit. He squeezed his hand. "I'll have to pass on that," he said.
"But –"
"I said no, thanks."
That was the end of it.
Years later, he thought back to that night.
The winter air was so cold that even Norway was feeling it. It seeped straight into the bones, made them ache. Or maybe it wasn't just the cold. With the way he and Denmark had been haemorrhaging cash and territory – well.
He kept quiet about it. Nothing could be gained from talking on it. Denmark, for all his sunny smiles, was hurting too. They both knew this.
Sweden's presence lingered, somehow. Norway could feel him, as if he was always just behind him, waiting for Norway to turn around. Ready to wrap him in a crushing embrace that wouldn't end.
Would he have been any better off if he'd said yes all those years ago?
No, he thought. But it might have been different, and that would be quite a thing.
