Shoreline

The seashore is quiet. That's no surprise; it's a bit chilly to be out for a walk by the ocean on a day like this. The sun is clear and bright, but the air is cold. Autumn will take a sharp turn soon. Denmark can feel it; soon the warm days will be far behind.

But for now... well!

It doesn't take much to convince Netherlands to join him.

"You gotta' be nuts," he'd said at first, staring as Denmark slipped off his shoes and socks and put them safely out of the water's reach. "The water must be freezing."

"Yeah?" A flash of a smile as Denmark bent to roll up the legs of his trousers. "What, you don't think I can handle a little cold? My family's built for cold, y'know." He went into the water without waiting for an answer.

Now, he kind of regrets it. A little.

It's definitely cold. Way too cold! A shiver runs through him, even though he tries to hide it. But as he looks back, he sees Netherlands bending down, expression bloody serious as he rolls up the legs of his pants. Denmark laughs, and continues on his way, kicking at the water.

Worth it.

Coarse sand between his toes. It'd be nice, if not for everything else. God, is it ever chilly. But it's worth it to hear Netherlands coming up to catch him, broad hand finally settling at his waist.

"Told you," Netherlands says. "It's fucking freezing!" But it doesn't look like it bugs him all that much, all things considered.

"Could run around a bit, y'know?" Denmark smiles again. The baffled look Netherlands gives him in return is hilarious.

"Wha -"

"Tag! You're it!" And he gives him a shove and runs.

It isn't easy in the water. Denmark's laughing anyway. He hears Netherlands huff loudly in frustration - then hears him running to catch up.

They chase each other in the too-bright afternoon light, laughing as if they have no responsibilities, like a pair of human kids. Running in circles, pushing at each other with the shallow water splashing coldly at their legs.

Something about being here like this with him makes Denmark's heart feel light.
Here, at the shoreline, the edge of his self; all sensitive borders.

The ocean will claim the both of them some day. They know this. But for now....

Denmark turns, catching Netherlands in his arms, hugging him so tight that they nearly fall over together.

For now, they have this.
