Measures
Outside, the air had chilled already. A few leaves clung stubbornly to the bare branches, but soon enough, they would fall too.
Netherlands wondered when the snow would come, and the ice, and the winter. It'd leave his home so cold, he'd hardly be able to stand it. But for the time being, he had a visitor – someone who warmed the air around him no matter how cold it got.
That someone was an acquired taste. Somehow, he'd grown used to his company. How the hell had that happened?
For the moment, Denmark's attention was on the latest of Netherlands' acquisitions.
"I've gotta' get me one of these," he said, staring at the pendulum clock on the wall of Netherlands' sitting room. Netherlands couldn't see his face, but he could picture his expression – those droopy eyes following the pendulum as it swung back and forth.
Netherlands grunted. "Not a chance." Which was true, and they both knew it. It had been a gift, and a precious one – the kind of thing that couldn't be bought, or at least not for a price that Denmark would ever be able to pay.
"Yeah, well." Denmark wasn't about to deny it. Somehow, he managed to tear his eyes away from the clock and come to sit across from Netherlands, smiling broad and bright. "You'll have to tell me more about that Huygens fella'. Must have a brain the size of a continent. Imagine, coming up with that kind of stuff!"
"You should see what else he's workin' on."
"Yeah?"
There was something about the way Denmark's eyes brightened that loosened Netherlands' tongue. "Yeah. If you'll be at my place a while, you might be able to ask him about it yourself." Normally, he couldn't be assed to make an offer like that. Arranging a meeting? Not if there was nothing in it for him. But the smile that crossed Denmark's face at the suggestion....
Later that night, Netherlands thought about it. That conversation. That offer. He wondered what had possessed him to make it. Not that it would cost him anything – it wouldn't – but it wasn't like him to go to any trouble for anybody else, either.
Denmark's nose was pressed against his neck, wild hair tickling his cheek. But he was warm, and for that, Netherlands wasn't about to push him away. Not with the autumn night already ice-cold and winter so very close.
Netherlands slid his fingers through Denmark's hair and wondered.
They'd been enemies a while back. Before their alliance. And ever since they'd decided to make nice, Denmark had been kind of a pain in the ass. Useful in some ways, but still a pain in the ass. But he had a way of growing on you.
In spite of everything, all the inconvenience of putting up with him – Netherlands wondered. Dared to think that maybe this closeness and warmth was fixed in its position. That their relationship – whatever it was – wouldn't ever swing back in the other direction.
It was a fucking foolish thing to ever hope for, he knew. Nothing in their lives was ever unchanging. Alliances could slip away like seconds. But with that warm body beside him, clinging to him in sleep, Netherlands couldn't help but think about it.
He liked having Denmark close, even with the cost.
