Fatal passage

Snow pricked at his eyes, froze on his lashes. Finland breathed, and the air was like needles in his lungs.

This was no natural storm.

Armfeldt tried to offer the men assurance. He would lead them home tomorrow, he said.

Finland would come with him. Those were the orders. The rushed message from Sweden had been very clear.

But what about those we're leaving behind? That was what Finland wanted to say.

Dark eyes haunted his snatched fits of sleep.

A soldier near him whispered to another. "The land wants us dead," he said.

You're right, Finland thought. It does.
