Guest

The scent in his nostrils was damp, fresh, foggy air. Crisp, green, cool. Reynir opened one eye, then the other.

Through the fog, he could see the dreamscape next to him. That wasn't the one he was looking for. He moved carefully, quickly, tip-toeing, clamping his mouth shut, barely daring to breathe. Just in case.

Could Lalli hear him? Reynir worried about it for a while as he stepped swiftly through the darkness, his feet making ripples on the glasslike surface.

He didn't know.

He didn't want to find out.

So he sidestepped Lalli's dream as carefully as he could, and moved on.

There was someone else he wanted to see.

"Knock-knock-knock! It's me!"

That was how Reynir greeted Onni as he stepped into the dream.

Because it was the polite thing to do. Because he wanted to. Because he knew by now that people get a little jumpy if you just waltz right in without saying anything. Onni was no exception.

The way it felt when Onni had shoved him against the flat stone of his dream hadn't left him. At the time, he had been afraid, until the recognition spilled out and Onni dropped him. But later, thinking back on it, the memory wrapped around him. It curled warmly inside, staying there in a way that Reynir didn't quite understand.

The time Onni threw him in the lake wasn't quite as nice. He didn't want a repeat of that, really.

Better to announce himself, then, before slipping into Onni's space. There should have been a barrier there, but there wasn't, not for him. Stepping in was as easy as – well.

As easy as stepping into someone's house when you were expected to visit.

Reynir slipped in to Onni's space, breathing deeply the scent of forest and water, and knew he was welcome.
