Concessions

Snow falls outside the strategist's tent.

The blizzard stilled the action. Now, they wait. Breathe. Recover.

Mei Changsu rests.

Jingrui, by his side, wonders if he should leave. He was asked to keep him company, but their talk has lulled. Mei Changsu looks deathly pale in the lanternlight.

"I remember when you used to follow us."

Mei Changsu's voice is soft, exhausted. Thoughtful. He stares upward through half-closed eyes, looking at nothing.

"I don't understand," Jingrui says. "What do you -"

"You were so fond of me. And of Jingyan. You and Yujin both."

The words are dreamy, strange, startling.

He is delirious, Jingrui thinks.

He searches for something to say. Stops himself. Should he say anything at all?

As he digs for the right words, the doctor in white returns, asking him to leave. Jingrui excuses himself as politely as he can, leaving his friend in Lin Chen's care.

The memory comes as he makes his way to his own tent. Remembers speaking with Yujin in a garden. The moment feels like a lifetime ago.

When Yujin looked at him, thoughtful as he asked, "Do you think Sir Su is...?" The question left unfinished.

How had they not known?

He carries this knowledge through the war.

Only when all is settled does he go to Mei Changsu.

Still alive, thanks to Lin Chen's skilled hands, it seems he's been waiting for this.

They try to discuss it. Even now, knowing everything, it seems impossible. Finally, Jingrui asks: "Why didn't you tell me?"

"The fewer people who knew, the better." A pause. "And you already had plenty to deal with."

It's enough.

Jingrui pulls him into his arms. The gesture is returned, after one hesitating moment.

Now, it's different.

They have truth. And time.

He knows they can start again.
