Ash
Warm summer air. All well.
The king's within Norway's borders again. Norway keeps close, shows his appreciation for this as best he can while they travel together.
They're together in Eiker when it happens. Norway knows something is wrong before anyone there hears tell of it. Sparks of pain gripping his heart.
He excuses himself. Doesn't do it well. Rushes his words. But there's no time to explain, not even to his king.
Even travelling as fast as he can, it takes him two days to reach Oslo.
Smoke stings his eyes. He wraps fabric over his mouth and nose so as not to breathe it in.
What's left of the city smoulders.
The fire devoured everything. Not for the first time, but worse than the others.
There's nothing left. Only Akershus is untouched.
It takes the king two weeks to reach Oslo. What's left of Oslo. Two weeks of ash and chaos. Norway dives into it, barely eating or sleeping, doing what he can to help the displaced.
Now, they meet in Akershus.
"I believe it's time to start anew. Completely."
"Not rebuild it?" Norway asks, looking out the window at the sky. So clear now, as if it was never blacked out with smoke.
"No. At this point, you need a new capital. Move it closer to the fortress. And a new name is in order."
In the window's reflection, Norway can see him poring over notes, contemplating them with care.
"I see," Norway says.
His heart aches.
