Warm for a moment [Roberto & Hiraga]
Title: Warm for a moment
Fandom: Vatican Miracle Examiner
Characters/Pairing: Roberto & Hiraga
Rating: 0+
Length: ~400 words
Summary: Snapshot of a case.
Other: At one point I wanted to write a VME casefic. I got started, wrote a little, and then decided that I wanted to start in a different way instead. Who knows if the actual story will get written! But I thought the little bit from the scrapped version worked well enough, so here - enjoy. :)
Warm for a moment
The winter morning's wind bit hard into his skin. Roberto pulled the flaps of his hat more securely over his ears, and tried not to think about frostbite.
He and Hiraga had only been at Fort Franklin for two days, but that amount of time had convinced Roberto that they should finish this investigation as quickly as possible – for more than the usual reasons.
Hiraga, for his part, seemed utterly oblivious to the cold, making his way down the hiking trail just slightly ahead of Roberto. They had gone down the same path the previous day with their host, who generously offered to double as guide, and now it was time to examine the supposed miracle of the singing river valley more thoroughly.
Ahead of them, the trees opened up, and the trail widened, and they found themselves at the lookout point.
The Athapaska River Valley sprawled out in front of them, spruce-covered ridges thrusting up high. It had snowed overnight, and everything from the low-bending trees to the river to the lookout ridge was covered in sparkling white, dazzling the senses and – unfortunately – covering up potential evidence that the supposed miraculous music could be a human creation, rather than a miracle of God.
The sun hadn't quite risen yet, but the sky was brightening.
"How much time do we have before sunrise?" Roberto asked, pushing the front of his ridiculous hat up a bit so he could see Hiraga clearly. The music, as they had witnessed in the presence of their guide the day before, would start when the first sun's rays crested the top of the valley.
"Fifteen minutes," was the cheerful reply, "According to schedule."
Hiraga's smile was bright, his cheeks rosy from the cold. Even with how chilly it was, he seemed energized, excited to get started. He slung his backpack full of equipment off of his shoulders and began putting together the special cold-weather-durable recording equipment that Lauren had sent ahead for him.
There was something so charming about the way Hiraga chattered as he worked, excitedly speculating with a smile on his face, his breath fogging sharply in the freezing air as he spoke out loud, wondering – would this one be genuine? Probably not, but you never could be sure, right?
Roberto watched him set up in the sparkling snow, and listened, and waited.
Perhaps, even though he was freezing – perhaps just for now, there was nowhere else he'd rather be.
