Blizzard

It was nearly summer when Norway went up to the mountain ridges that edged his border with Sweden. In dark shady places snow patches sat, contemplative, like white cows.

By then, scavengers both animal and human had done their work. Still, there were signs that someone had come through. Pieces of burnt sledge and gunstock. Scraps of blue uniform. Bones the ravens had cleaned.

They had found men frozen in place as if still alive, the locals had said.

Norway didn't regret sending the blizzard. It had not even been all his doing; the weather needed nothing more than a push.

He'd heard rumours from the farmers. A Finn seen speaking with Armfeldt at Østby. Round-faced and serious, looking like death itself. Thought to have perished until, just before departure, he'd breathed and roused himself.

Norway wondered if that was who he thought it was.

He thought of the days and nights that must have followed. Freezing. Dying. Reviving. Again. It wasn't something he'd wish on anyone. And his quarrel wasn't with him, not really.

Norway's stomach turned as his horse picked its way through the mountain trail toward Tydal.

Whatever his personal feelings, it didn't matter in the least.
