Winter in Scalloway
Norway wakes with a start, guns thundering in his ears, fire burning bright enough to blind him.
In seconds he realizes it's nothing but rough winter ocean and daylight. And someone else is in the room – ah. Her.
"You called out. Thought I'd check on you."
"That so."
Shetland frowns. There is a parting in the curtains, sunlight hitting her hair. It has a red sheen it didn't have when he knew her. But her face, Norway thinks, is still like his. "It's so," she says.
She sits on the chair beside the bed. There is a flask in her hand, and she offers it.
Norway takes it, uncertain. "Why?"
"For sleep," Shetland says. "As you're leaving again tonight. Need yourself rest if you're to manage." The ocean slams her shore again, echoing.
He downs it without a word, sharp and smoky and burning. It will have to be enough.
