Lol, yeah, considering that the characters are country personifications, it definitely wouldn't make sense if it was all "nice" all the time (hell, even in canon, that's not the case!). But I find it can be hard to get a good balance - the right amount of mess can make things really interesting, but too much and it becomes super edgy, which isn't really my style, haa. And in some cases it's like - I feel like I don't really have the skill to handle serious subjects, especially if the unpleasant part is relatively recent, pretty complicated, and involves stuff that I don't know a lot about. But at the same time, having background knowledge about that is useful, because even if I don't touch any of that, it's still something that would inform how a character sees himself, how he feels about others, what his hangups are... And that is really interesting.

I very well might take you up on that offer at some point, to be honest! (More likely for positive/general cultural stuff, but who knows) Could even be sooner rather than later, 'cause there's a premise that I've been poking at but so far there's been some sticking points.
