Peaches and Cherries
Eh-hey. Let's see then.
A long time ago there was a man. He was cleaning his house and found a packet of seeds. It was unmarked, no picture, no nothing. He didn't know what it was. He said, "Yah, I wonder what this is. I'll plant it."
So he planted the seeds in the good black earth, and he waited.
One day the plant poked its head up out of the earth. It said, "Hey-yah, water me." And the man was kind of startled by this, because you know, plants don't talk much, but he figured he should listen to it. So, he watered the plant.
It grew and grew and every day when he went to check on it, it said to him, "Hey-yah, water me". And he did. And it grew and grew and grew until finally it was a big tree.
Now, the man thought, this is a strange plant. Trees don't grow that fast, and they don't talk, and they don't have two types of fruit on them. This tree did, you see. It had bright red cherries and rosy yellow peaches on it.
The man said to the tree, "You have lovely fruit, there."
And the tree said, "Hey-yah, yes. Have one if you want. But only the peaches - if you eat the cherries, nothing good will come from it, I say."
The man decided that, well, if the plant was a talking plant, he should probably listen to it. So he ate one of the peaches, and it was delicious. He picked several of them and brought them into his house and made some delicious pies.
Now, this man had a brother, and the next day his brother decided to visit him after being away all through the summer. "Where did that tree out back come from?" the brother said.
"It just decided to grow," the man said. "It has nice fruit on it; go out and take a look. But mind what it tells you."
Well, the brother gave him a funny look, because of course trees don't say things, right? But he went out and he looked at the tree and he said to himself, "Wow, them cherries look delicious".
And the tree said, "Hey-yah, don't eat my cherries."
And the brother said, "What the hell, why are you talking? You can't talk, you're a tree."
And the tree said, "Shut the hell up, I'll talk if I want."
And the brother rolled his eyes and ate some of the cherries even though the tree bitched at him not to. Then he fell down dead, because though they were nice-looking, they were poisonous.
So, if you ever find a tree that talks to you, you might want to shut up and listen to it.
