Late night. Quiet. Unlike a typical night, Norway was not alone in his house. Iceland was staying over. But an hour earlier, he had gone to bed, or so he'd said, leaving Norway downstairs.
Feeling the house around him, Norway breathed, listened, and knew that Iceland was still awake. Iceland had asked to stay in the spare room even though he would have been welcome to share a bed if he'd wanted to. Norway didn't mind. It was good to have separate space, sometimes.
So. In the bedroom next to Norway's, Iceland was still awake, and thinking, and more likely than not getting up the nerve to come down again.
Downstairs in the kitchen, Norway listened to the house. Felt Iceland. Waited for him.
He washed the dishes from the evening just for something to do. It could have waited until morning, but he was restless. That evening, over a game of chess and a bowl of crisps, he'd told Iceland he could do as he liked, but he'd have to take some initiative. Didn't look at him as he contemplated the next move, but after he placed his piece on the board, he looked at Iceland's face.
Iceland had stared down at the board, his cheeks pink, his teeth worrying at his lower lip in thought.
Though he didn't meet Norway's gaze, it was clear he'd gotten the point.
So, Norway waited. Listened. Waited.
Eventually, he heard the footfalls, felt the slight change in the air as someone entered the kitchen. He didn't turn around; just continued to stack plates until he felt Iceland's slim arms wrap around his waist.
"You're awake," Norway said quietly. As if he hadn't already known.
A soft sigh. "Yeah." The hold tightened.
Norway made a soft sound of acknowledgement. Drained the sink. Then he leaned back into him, and as Iceland brushed a kiss to his neck, he let his eyes fall shut.
You can have what you like, he thought, knowing that Iceland understood. You can have what you like, if only you'll take it.
