Interlude II [Romania/Norway]

Summary: Norway just wants to cuddle. Romania is fine with that.
Other: This was supposed to actually be in the same fic as Interlude I, but the scene didn't really fit, so I separated them into two parts. I think it works much better this way.
Interlude II
When they went to bed together that evening, the house was quiet and still. Outside, the sun's brightness was excessive despite the late hour, washing the Norwegian landscape with gold.
They had spent the evening taking it easy – a simple dinner, fruit for dessert. Playing cards on the patio, condensation cold on their beer cans as they let time run.
Romania did most of the talking, as usual, saying whatever came to mind. From the expression on Norway's face, the slight smile, the way he looked whenever their eyes met – Romania could tell that he was content with it all.
When finally they cleared off the patio table, shut the door, and went upstairs together, the mood between them was quiet and slow.
Norway went to the bedroom window. He stood there for a moment, looking out at the bright evening. Then he opened the window to let the air in.
Romania went to him. He slid his arms around Norway, who melted against him, pressing close without a second thought. There was a softness in him, a warmth in the way their bodies fit together, something perfect about it.
Leaning in close, Romania nosed along Norway's cheek until their lips brushed. It was a soft, barely-there touch. Normally Norway would press closer, deepen the kiss, and lead it somewhere else, or at least hint at something like that.
This time, he didn't. The kiss remained soft and gentle.
No open mouth, tongue sweeping over Romania's lips.
No hands in his hair. No body pressing closer.
Norway drew away for a moment. Looked at Romania, his expression quiet and thoughtful. Romania wanted to ask about the change, the mood, the reason, but didn't. He stayed quiet, waited, and in a moment Norway kissed him again, as gently as before. Then he rested his head against Romania's shoulder, staying nestled against him.
"I'd like to just be close tonight," Norway murmured. "That's all." There was an apologetic note to his voice, as if he was sure that Romania wanted something else, something more. That he thought Romania would be disappointed if he didn't get it.
It couldn't be farther from the truth.
As far as Romania was concerned, any time with Norway was good. Whether they had sex or not, it didn't matter. At one point, Romania had thought that sex was all Norway wanted from him, but over time he had learned otherwise.
There was so much more to what they had than that.
Romania tightened his hold on Norway, giving him a little squeeze. "Sounds good to me," he said.
"You don't mind?"
"What, that you want to cuddle?" Romania smiled. "Not in the least."
There was a long pause, as if Norway was trying to think about how to reply to that, and was completely lost for what to say. There was an embarrassed note to the silence, which led Romania to wonder if maybe Norway really had been concerned about this.
"Okay," Norway said finally, the word soft and low. Relaxed. Accepting. He nuzzled against Romania's neck, all tension gone from his body. Then he drew away, and took Romania's hand.
More than once, Norway had led him to bed exactly like this. Taken his hand, drawn him to bed, pressed him down onto clean sheets. And even if it was different this time – it was just as good.
Romania snaked an arm around Norway's waist. Sighed as Norway's fingers twined in his hair, sliding through it slowly, slowly. Fingertips trailing over his scalp, then down, slipping through the strands, then repeating. He felt hazy and light, soft.
If this was all Norway wanted – how could he possibly mind?
