Keep going. One step. Two. Every breath was laboured, every movement sent a shot of pain through him. One step. Another. The guns weighed him down, dragged him, heavy as the memories he had of his friend. Present, far too present. They had planned to see it through together.
It didn’t matter. He stumbled, nearly fell, righted himself. The effort made him hiss in pain. It would be over soon regardless, he knew it. His wounds would end him, if someone else didn’t.
He nodded to himself. Best get it over with, then.
He stumbled into the clearing. There were others around watching, he knew it, could practically feel their eyes.
“Come out.” He said it, his voice hoarse. Swallowed, drew a breath, then said it louder, more firmly. “Come on and get me.”
