Do I know you?

It was a warm and breezy autumn afternoon.

Hours earlier, he had met to discuss certain matters of importance with his frustrating neighbour, that one from across the river. Russia. He had been talking with Russia. Though it had been brief, it was not brief enough for Estonia's liking, and the meeting had not ended as soon as he had hoped.

Regardless, he had met with Russia, and after a time they parted ways. Russia left him with a smile on his face, saying that he had to leave, but it had been so nice to spend the morning with him. They were such good friends, weren't they?

Estonia had been disinclined to express disagreement.

That had been before. Now, walking down by the river, he found that the discomfort had eased. In all, it hadn't been bad, and it would be a while befor they would have to speak again, and furthermore ---

"Hey!"

His train of thought was interrupted by the sound of someone calling out in Russian. He turned in that direction, and quickly found the source: A young woman was chasing her straw hat, which had been caught in the wind and was tumbling toward him.

He caught it. Of course he caught it. He held it, dusted it off, and waited. She came up to him, breathless, her long hair mussed from the wind, and smiled.

"Thank you!"

"You're welcome." Estonia handed it back to her, returning the smile and replying as she had spoken, in Russian. The smile felt strained and the language tasted unpleasant in his mouth. He had taken his fill of that language during the meeting and speaking it again wearied him. He hoped she wouldn't notice his discomfort, and he hoped she wouldn't ask--

"You look familiar. Do I know you?"

That question. Estonia held in the sigh, and shook his head instead. "No," he lied. "I don't think so. I've been through Narva before, but I'm only here on business."

It was always awkward, that question. Sometimes they insisted that no, really, they were sure they knew him, had seen him somewhere, perhaps they had gone to school together at one point, or something of the sort. Sometimes they looked disappointed. This one, however, was neither, and instead was content to simply drop the issue.

For a time they walked together by the riverbank, side by side through the bright grass and yellow flowers. Any awkwardness drifted away. Estonia found himself at ease as she spoke to him about frivolous things - the weather, the colour of th leaves as they turned, the coming chill of winter. She never seemed to cease her smiling, the warm tone of her voice never leaving.

It was fine. No matter which language she spoke, she was still one of his own.
