Keeping in check
"Check."
"Beg y'pardon?"
"Yer king's in Check."
Norway stared at the chessboard, which seemed to stare back from its place on the floor between them. In the shadow of the dimly-lit room, broken by firelight and candles, his king did indeed appear to be in Check. He looked back up at Sweden to raise an eyebrow, and Sweden simply pushed up his glasses and pretended not to see.
"Lemme' see here," Norway muttered, taking hold of a nearby candle and bringing it in close. As the light pooled across the chequered board, there was no denying it. "Blow me," he muttered.
There was a startled sound from Sweden. "Meant that figuratively," Norway added.
"That so."
A nod. "It's so." Having said it, Norway looked, scrutinized the board one last time, then made his move.
Wood clicked on wood as the piece was put into place. "Checkmate."
There was nothing left to say.
