Reindeers are better than people

I'm going on holiday. Not sure when I'll be back. Might be about a month. Thanks.

That was the note that he left behind for his government. Not that he needed to, but it was the responsible thing to do, wasn't it. Even if he hadn't told them where he'd gone, at least they'd know that he had left.

Norway turned and looked back in the direction that he'd come from. The lights from the village by the fjord twinkled in the winter darkness. Everything was still. If it began to snow, he'd hear it falling.

That was good. That was just what he wanted: peace and quiet. Oslo was far behind him, and he wasn't about to head back there in a hurry. The villager he had rented the cabin and his transportation from had warned him: "It's awful cold 'round these parts this time of year, and up in them backwoods it's downright lonely too." But that was exactly what Norway was after. No, the ease of the country was more his speed, and its silence too. And even better, the only company that he would have where he was going was company that wasn't keen on talking.

"Well," he said. "Ought to get a move on, then." Turning his back to the tiny lights of the village, he gave his travel partner a smile. "Isn't that right."

The reindeer snorted and nosed at him, nibbling at his scarf.

"Ain't that I mind 'em, understand," Norway replied, stroking at his companion's thick coat, then checking the trappings of its harness one more time. "'Course not. They're my own people, you know that." He paused, looking back at the lights once more. "But even someone like me needs time to his own self, doesn't he."

The reindeer didn't answer, and that was perfectly fine with him. Norway stepped back and sat himself down in the sledge, making himself comfortable amid his supplies. Then with a click of his tongue, they were off.

As they headed out into the dark forest's stillness, the snow started to fall.
