Cherished [Estonia/Finland]
Title: Cherished
Characters/Pairing: Estonia/Finland
Rating: 13+
Length: ~600
Summary: It hasn't been that long since Estonia visited Finland, but it feels like ages.
Other: I found this while poking around my hard drive. It seems to be finished, but I never posted it anywhere. I think this was originally a response to a request, but I can't remember who asked for it or what the prompt was. The title is the file name and the date stamp was March 09, 2012. Anyway, I've posted it for Estonia Week on Tumblr. (Original post)
Cherished
The familiar greeting rang to him as he stepped into the apartment.
"Estonia! I've missed you!"
Finland didn't leave Estonia any time to respond before pulling him into his arms, and for all that, Estonia didn't object in the least. It didn't matter that he was barely in the door and utterly soaked from the autumn rain outside. What mattered was Finland latching onto him and pushing him back against the door, threatening to send them both off balance.
"It hasn't been that long, has it?" Estonia asked as he tried to right himself. Between Finland and the door and the heavy overnight bag draped over one arm, it was not that easy.
"Oh, I guess not. But it feels like it! Doesn't it?"
"Well, I-" He began to object, but quickly gave up, as there was no arguing with Finland in this situation. "I guess it does."
In truth, it had only been a few months. Hadn't it? A few months - no more than six months, surely - and it was really nothing to get worked up about, or so Estonia told himself. They had gone without seeing each other for far longer than that - years, at times, in fact! But as Finland pressed him more tightly at the door and nuzzled at his neck and threatened once again to send his feet slipping out from under him, Estonia decided that maybe it was the frequency of visits that made the absences seem so long. If they could see each other as much as they wanted, nothing was keeping them apart, really.
"It doesn't matter, I'm just happy to see you, but I hope that the rain will let up, it's getting a bit much - don't you think? - oh, wait, you're all wet aren't you, I know I should've gone to pick you up when you got here but you did insist that you could make it, I didn't think it would rain this hard, maybe you should get yourself changed, and I've put the coffee on, maybe you'd like some. Or would you rather we stayed here?" The last part was said as Finland drew away a bit, smiling at him in that usual way he had, bright and broad and warm, but somehow understated.
"Er," Estonia said, taking his time as he attempted to process what his friend had just said. "I'm not sure-"
"No, I think you know what I mean."
It might not have been clear at first, but the palm to his chest holding him firmly against the door and the smile Finland gave him before pressing a kiss to his lips made his intention precisely clear.
The overnight bag thudded onto the floor beside the small puddles pooling at Estonia's feet. He didn't mind. They could stay there a while.
It had been a long time.
That night he looked out the window at the city's night sky. Helsinki's lights blotted out most of the stars, but a few stubborn ones could still be seen with ease. Estonia counted them as he listened to the dim sounds of Finland brushing his teeth in the washroom.
The words from that afternoon came back to him. I missed you. But they weren't really from that afternoon, not really. That was how he always greeted him after they'd been apart for a while: a bright smile and arms pulling him into a tight hug and Estonia! I've missed you!. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Somehow, it still took him by surprise every time.
