Annapolis Autumn
Poland plastered her face to the passenger window of Canada's car. "Oh. My. Gosh!"
Maples. Like, everywhere. Bright red and orange and super pretty, flashing like flames as they drove past. That, and big fields of corn, and orchards full of trees thick and heavy with apples, and wide pumpkin patches with signs out front advertising, "Pick your own!!" But mostly, it was the maple trees that caught her.
Beside her, she could hear Canada laughing. "You like it?" she said.
"Like, yeah. Where did you say we were going to stop again?"
"Wolfville. There's some nice walking trails behind the botanical gardens there. Now, that stretch of water over there – that's the Minas Basin."
Up over a ridge, and then the basin spread out in front of them - bright blue water rushing up to the red and orange coast. Poland stared out the window - probably her nose would get a crease in it from pressing against the glass so hard but at that moment, she didn't care one bit. What had Canada called the area they were in right now? Annapolis Valley, wasn't it? How pretty.
"And there's a nice restaurant down on Main Street; maybe we could go there for supper. Sound good?"
"Okay!" Poland tore herself away from the window long enough to swivel around in her seat and plant a kiss on her friend's cheek.
"That's great - wh- hey!" There was an unsteady moment before Canada righted both herself and the vehicle's position on the highway, gripping at the wheel and blushing furiously, her glasses slipping down her nose. "Poland. Not while I'm driving, okay?"
But by that time, Poland was back to staring out the window, and it went in one ear and out the other.
Maples. So pretty, oh my gosh!
