Best-Laid Plans
A weekend together, just the two of them. They'd go skiing, and have some nice, quiet nights together. No telephones, no annoying brothers, no interruptions. Iceland had suggested it, doing it in that faux-casual way he had, as if it wasn't really that important at all, even though it was clear he hoped Canada would accept. So, Canada just smiled and agreed. It would be good for them to have some private time together, he told him over the phone. I'd really like to see you again.
He wasn't sure why Iceland felt the need to act that way with him, but he was like that with everyone, from what Canada had seen. So, it was fine. He didn't mind. It was clear enough just how much it meant to Iceland anyway, when Canada went to pick him up at the airport. The way his face lit up was exactly what he knew he'd see, but that didn't make the feeling stirring in Canada's chest any less warm.
It was all well and good until the sky dumped a ton of extra snow overnight. They woke to a pristine road not yet marred by anything driving on it, the yard untouched, the quiet and stillness enough to be felt through the window's chilled glass.
Canada looked outside, sighed, and turned on the coffee maker. When he heard slippered feet coming into the chilly kitchen, he didn't turn around; only said: "Good morning! Looks like it'll be a good day for skiing, but... Um."
"'Um'?" Iceland coiled his arms around him from behind and rested his head on Canada's shoulder. "Um, what?"
He's barely awake, Canada thought. It was cute, the lazy tone that his words had, and the way that he rested against him as if he'd have a hard time staying upright otherwise. "... I'll have to dig the car out first. Before we go, I mean. Look at all that snow out there - pretty crazy, eh?"
Iceland blinked blearily out the window, then pressed a lazy kiss to Canada's cheek. "I'll help," he mumbled. "But coffee first, okay?"
Later, as they shovelled the driveway together, the flaps on their hats down over their ears and scarves pulled over their noses, it seemed - even this wasn't a bad start to the day. ... Even if it wasn't quite the kind of 'quiet time together' that they had expected.
