Straight Ice
The sound of their blades on the ice was sharp, slip-slip-slipping as they cut through it at their relaxed, easy pace, skating beside one another.
It wasn't like at home, where the length of the canals stretched things out, going on forever - but they didn’t freeze solid that often, these days. Not like they used to centuries ago, back when the scenes his artists painted of people gliding across them were true to life in spirit, if not exact in image.
Here, on Norway's lake, the landscape rose up around them. Huge trees ringing around it, sheltering it, and if he didn't know that there was a village nearby, he might feel as if they were smack dab in the middle of a forest. At their right hand, the mountains reached up to the sky.
Nothing like his canals. None of that straightness. Nothing like his flat landscape, where the highest things you'd see would be the buildings his people had put up.
And it was fucking cold, too, Netherlands thought as he pulled his scarf more snugly around his throat to protect against it. But Norway had wanted to go skating. Said it was “right mild” out. Don't let all that snow out there fool you.
If this was what he called ‘mild’, Netherlands didn’t want to find out what he thought cold was.
But when Norway skated close to him, took him by the hand and pulled him along with a smile - well. Smiles from Norway didn’t come cheap.
It was a stiff bargain, but he’d take it.
