Clumsy
The sky was dark, the colour of a deep bruise, green-grey and troubled. Lalli stepped outside the tank, looked up, and breathed in.
He could smell the storm coming.
That wasn't a problem, he decided. For one moment he paused, lingering only to take in the sharp air and adjust his expectations. He'd need to account for -
The door opened and closed, and a familiar voice said something he didn't understand.
Emil.
Lalli turned his head to look at him. Emil pointed at the sky, as if Lalli hadn't noticed that it was going to rain soon. Then he pointed at the tank and spoke again.
He looked worried.
Do you think I can't scout in the rain? Lalli wondered, a sharp frown creasing his lips. He shook his head and looked toward the sky again. It wasn't enough to concern him. He could do just fine. A little rain was nothing, and the storm wasn't bound to start for at least -
A touch. A hand on his shoulder. Lalli looked at Emil again. His brows were drawn, teeth biting at his lip. He spoke again, more anxious this time, his gaze darting toward the dark sky before coming back to look nervously at his face.
Maybe doubt in Lalli's abilities wasn't the problem. Emil looked genuinely worried. You're too soft, Lalli thought as he wordlessly detached himself from Emil, gently plucking his hand off his shoulder and giving it a pat before dropping it. Looking into Emil's worried eyes, he hesitated, then moved to gently cup his face. Even if it wasn't the first time he'd done that, even if they'd shared touches like that in the few snips of time they could catch in quiet, it felt strange. And he knew that he was wasting time, that every moment he took was one moment closer to the storm, but he knew that he would only be a few seconds longer.
If this scares you, he thought as he brushed his thumb over Emil's cheek, then what about when something bad actually happens? Where will you be then? "I'll be okay," he murmured, hoping Emil understood. He'd said those words before. It's okay. I'm okay. This is okay. Did he know them by now? Did he understand?
There was a pause. Emil nodded. Muttered something, looking embarrassed.
Good enough, Lalli decided. Time to go. But first-
He hesitated. Then he tilted his head and kissed him.
It wasn't a good kiss. Their noses bumped. It was too sharp, too abrupt, too quick, and he pulled away before Emil returned it.
They stared at each other, Emil's eyes wide, as if he couldn't believe Lalli had done that. Not out in the open like that - even if they were the only ones outside, everyone else having already turned in. Lalli stared back, embarrassed and wondering if he had got the point across clearly enough, if Emil understood it. If he could leave.
Then Emil reached out, tugged him close, and kissed him.
That time wasn't any better. Lalli let out a startled sound against Emil's mouth and bit down on his lower lip. That wasn't welcome at all, and as quickly as Emil pulled him close, he shoved him away.
As he regained his balance Lalli could feel the hot, uncomfortable feeling of embarrassment creeping up is neck. He looked at Emil again, watching him smooth his tongue over his lip where Lalli bit him. Then, suddenly, Emil smiled. Laughed. His expression softened.
He didn't look worried any more.
Laughing again, Emil said something, then held out his hand. Lalli glanced to it, but didn't take it. They'd come to an understanding; that was good enough.
"I have to go," he said firmly. Even if the words didn't get through, the meaning must have, because Emil sighed and nodded.
Lalli looked up to the sky, then put up his hood, turned away, and didn't look back.
He took a step, and he ran, and as he sped through the night rain began to fall.
Even as he muttered a curse under his breath, Lalli decided - maybe - that he wasn't so bothered after all. It was only a few minutes of lost time.
A little bit of rain wouldn't hurt him.
