Eavesdropping

Finland went up the driveway, cheerful at the thought of seeing Sweden again. At the door he paused, hand on the knob. A sound was coming from a nearby open window. A guitar, and singing. He hesitated for a moment before curiosity got the better of him.

Ducking down out of sight, he snuck until he was directly beneath the window. The words floated to him, light and cheerful and clear. Sweden’s voice. Finland could feel his cheeks heating as he recognized the words. He knew that song; some love song about a girl named Elenor - except Sweden was replacing it with his name. Finland's name. Swallowing harshly, he lifted his head a bit, peeking through the geraniums in the windowbox. He knew he had to be stealthy; he was sure that if Sweden took notice of him, he would stop singing immediately.

Luckily for Finland, the flowers and the curtains prevented him from being seen, so he could listen – and watch – to his heart’s content.

Sweden was lounging on the sofa, strumming the old, beaten-up guitar he had had for a while. Finland had heard him play before, but that was rare – and singing even rarer. So he turned his ears that way and soaked it all in, his guts twisting and fluttering pleasantly.

“Finland, oh can I take the time to ask you to speak your mind, tell me that you love m--”

The music stopped abruptly. Finland bit his lower lip, hoping he hadn't been discovered. Then it started again, and he let out a sigh, and listened.

End.
