Secrecy

They said nothing. Kept it quiet. Kept it safe. Kept it between them.

When they were out, surrounded by others, they carried on as they had before, as if nothing had happened that one night. As if the campfire and the kiss had been nothing but their imagination. As if their linked hands and the warmth of their bodies against one another in the dark was nothing but a dream they'd shared only for one night.

Sometimes it was hard to hold it in. When Hannu lifted his head, caught Joona's eye. When they sat close to one another. Long fingers in Hannu's messy hair, ruffling it. Long arm slung over his shoulder, the way Joona always did, the way he did with all of his friends.

Hannu found it hard to bite his tongue.

The time they had alone together was quick, brief, never enough. Walking side by side in the evening's dark, not rushing because that would draw attention. Talking quietly about nothing, as if there was nothing between them.

It was only when they stepped inside Hannu's door that it was different. When it pressed shut. When the latch clicked. When Joona pressed him against it and kissed him hard, and in that moment gave him everything he had been holding for hours, days, weeks.

Hannu took it. Accepted it. Let his hands rise, grip the fabric of Joona's jacket, pull him closer. Just enough. Just for a little while.

Who knew how long it would last?
