Little Moments in December

Snow fell.

Hannu lifted the curtain. Peered out into the morning. The darkness was cut with the streetlamp's yellow glow, picking out every tiny flake.

The moon had pulled him awake. Too much light spilling into the room. It didn't matter. They'd have to be up soon, anyway.

On the bed, Ville dozed. Hadn't stirred. Good. Hannu reached over and gently pulled the covers up over him a little more.

He stepped into his slippers and made his way to the kitchen. Put on the coffee in the morning quiet, then watched, through the glass, the silence and the stillness.

It was like everyone had picked that day to come by the Kuikka store.

Everyone. All at once. The entire village.

Every single person in Hokanniemi was suddenly out of bread. Obviously.

Hannu was spared the worst of it. That was one of the perks of working in the back. Not having to deal with the questions, and the noise, and having to talk to people.

Leave that to Ville, who seemed to actually like working the front, now that he knew how to do it.

Bread didn't make inane comments, Hannu thought, and didn't argue, or waste his time.

"When do you want us to come pick you up, honey?"

Hannu cradled the phone between his cheek and shoulder, and rolled his eyes. "I dunno. I'm working up until the 23rd."

"We'll come in the evening, then."

"Mm."

A question pressed at his mind. Should he ask – well. Better make sure.

"I'm bringing Ville with me. That's fine, right?" It was a question he had asked before, but it had been different then.

"Oh, of course! We just assumed that he wanted to come, actually."

Of course. There had been no question. Hannu smiled.

Maybe nothing had changed, anyway.

Wrapping wasn't as easy as it looked.

At least, not if you weren't used to having opposable thumbs, anyway.

Normally, Hannu wouldn't go to the trouble. Wouldn't bother. He'd put the gifts in giftbags. He had better things to do than fuss with it. But Ville had wanted to wrap them, do them up nicely, like in movies and magazines.

Well....

After watching him try to figure it out for a few minutes, Hannu patted him on the head. "Want me to show you?"

"No, I –" A frustrated huff. "Well, yes." A defeated slump.

Hannu reached for the paper.

They zipped their coats up all the way. Stepped out into the dark afternoon.

Light spilled out from the store.

Hannu shoved his hands in his pockets. Watched Ville out of the corner of his eye.

Ville was practically vibrating with excitement, and had been like that all day.

As they walked in silence, Hannu decided that even though he'd rather do without all the fuss, the annoying pain-in-the-ass of presents and preparations, maybe it was all right – if only for the way Ville looked at times like this.

The snow crunched under their feet.

Only a few more days.
