Perhaps [Marie Antoinette -> Lady Oscar]

Title: Perhaps
Fandom: Rose of Versailles
Characters/Pairing: Marie Antoinette -> Lady Oscar
Rating: 0+
Length: ~370
Summary: Marie's husband was not half the man that Lady Oscar was. This was profoundly disappointing.
Other: This was a braindump that happened after having watched ~4 eps or so... It was originally intended to be longer, but I decided that I liked it as-is.

Perhaps

Marie Antoinette quickly came to one undeniable conclusion: The man of her dreams was not, in fact, her husband.

It was also entirely true that the dashing and handsome person who most excited her imagination wasn't actually a man at all.

She knew this because she had met him – well, that is to say, her – under most unusual, and wondrous, and terrifying circumstances. After Marie was properly Retrieved, and everything proceeded as it should, she was for a while entirely distracted from thoughts of this person. But when night fell, that was another matter entirely, and as soon as she had quiet time to rest, it was absolutely impossible to think of anything or anyone other than her gallant rescuer.

And when she happened to fall asleep that night, and dreamed of Lady Oscar instead of the boy she had travelled so far to marry, Marie found that she wasn't surprised at all.

Her husband had proven to be – disappointing. The extent of his shyness had been most unexpected, and everything else, well – Marie could only tell herself that this match was for the Good Of Her Country, and for his as well, and perhaps in time she would grow fond of him, and with luck they would be fortunate to have a happy marriage, and delightful children.

But at the present, the matter was undeniable: Louis was not even half the man that Lady Oscar was.

Marie gave this matter careful consideration, or at least as much consideration as she was inclined to give, which is to say very little. The affections of the Captain of the Guard would be just as attainable regardless of his or her sex.

In fact, Lady Oscar's peculiarities meant that there were no particular reasons for her to not be permitted to be in close quarters with Marie.

For that, Marie was very thankful. Even if Lady Oscar was not – and could never be – her husband, then at least they could speak to one another, and Marie could, perhaps, take pleasure in her company. Perhaps, over time, they could be friends. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps –

But as she stared upward in her bed, sleepless under the weight of her disappointment, Marie found it difficult to be satisfied with mere possibilities.
