Stumbling over impossible trails
When the warnings came, Åsa didn't pay attention, not at first. Trouble boiled up abroad, but as always, she felt as if nothing could touch her little village.
The sickness arrived on Finnish shores. Illness and fear was in the air. Even in her village, pale faces glanced around with worry.
Finally, the seal whispered, and she listened.
Be careful.
She woke from a troubled dream and stared up at the ceiling for a long moment. The strange encounter she'd had the evening before stuck in her mind, had played over in her head in her sleep.
The round face and large eyes poking up out of the water near her dock had looked terribly worried. The hushed, trembling voice brought a warning for her to be careful. To run. To pack up everything, her belongings and her family, and leave the mainland.
I'm going crazy, Åsa thought, sitting up in bed, raking a hand through her hair. But she had heard the voice, and it sounded familiar. And she'd had a dream, and the things in it were terrifying. And she had been listening to the news, the things that were happening abroad. The things that were happening in the cities.
She turned on the bedside lamp.
The light cast a warm glow across the face of the woman beside her, the woman she had loved for thirty years.
Pack up your loved ones, the seal had said. Get what you need and run.
Åsa wasn't one to run from anything. Ordinarily, she'd prefer to take her problems as they happened, take them head on. And if it was too much to handle on her own, then she could lean on her lover. Ragna, with her stern eyes and iron nerves. Ragna, with her temper as wild as her far-off home country. Ragna, who had met her by chance, and who had stayed, to the surprise of both of them.
But this, Åsa thought, was bigger than either of them could handle.
Go to the islands, the seal had said. Get what you need and go.
Fine, Åsa thought. So be it.
In the morning, Åsa told Ragna her plan. She didn't tell her about the seal, or about the dreams, or about the troubling worry that bubbled up inside of her. She only told her about the cabin on the island, the one that had been in her family for ages.
Ragna listened, her lips drawn into a thin, serious line. And when Åsa was finished, she nodded once, in acceptance. "Right," she said. "Let's get to it, then. No sense in wasting time dilly-dallying around here."
Åsa kissed her, then. Only long enough to make a point. There were many reasons that she loved her, and her determination was one of them.
Anssi and Riikka agreed to her plan, after a word or two. Åsa's brother and his wife took more convincing.
It took hours of persuading, arguing, and cajoling. In the end, they caved, and she suspected that it was more out of a desire to make her shut up than it was out of fear of the alternative. That didn't matter. What did matter was that her boat had room enough for the lot of them.
They packed up their supplies, and provisions, and their lives. After she locked the front door of her house, and checked to make sure that it was secure, Åsa leaned against Ragna, unsure of what to say. A weight hung over her, and the ring of keys in her pocket felt heavy, as if she would never reach for it again. As if she would never step through that front door again.
In the end, Ragna spoke for her.
"Come on, then," she said, patting at Åsa's hair. She brushed her fingers along the curve of Åsa's face and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Your niece is waiting. Let's go pick her up."
They left, and shed their old life behind them.
