Exhale

Sssh, she says.

But—

The word stays in his mouth. She presses her fingers to his lips. Keeps it inside.

A sliver of gold seeps in from underneath the door.

They wait. Listen.

For footsteps. For someone calling. For the doorknob of the storage room turning.

And when nothing happens, she ducks her head, and swallows him without a sound.
