This one actually ties in with my Kajaani stories. (Cookies for you if you can figure out how.)

North flight

"No. No, and no, and no. Where on earth did you get this idea? I'm staying right where I am, young man."

Vuokko listened, cradling the phone's receiver against her cheek. She frowned as her son – once again – said that it wasn't so crazy an idea, and really, it made perfect sense to go up north, because –

"Okay, mom, look. Just – you said that the school has closed down until further notice, right?"

"Yes," Vuokko replied crisply. "It wasn't my decision, you understand. The entire district has closed."

"And it's probably going to be closed for a while. We both know how these things go. Bureaucracy and all that. So, why not take a little roadtrip? We have that cabin up near Kuhmo; we could just stay there for a while, and –"

Vuokko pursed her lips and let her son talk, trying to persuade her to go along with his utterly silly idea. Again. For the third time. She glanced outside the window. The rain had stopped for the first time in days, but it looked as if it could start once more at any time. "It's hardly the season for lakeside vacations, Timo."

"Are you saying that you don't want to spend some quality time with me?"

"I can spend quality time with you whenever I like."

"But you don't, because usually, we're both working. You know that just as well as I do." His voice had a smile in it; she could picture it so easily. "Besides, it's been a while since you've seen your granddaughter; wouldn't you like to?"

She could feel a headache coming on.

"Timo, I really don't think this is a good idea."

There was a sound from the other end. It sounded like a sigh. "I just want to be sure you're okay."

It was impossible to tell what had gotten into her son. Ordinarily he was such a good boy – well, not a boy, not any more, not for a long time. Young man, then. She had to keep reminding herself of that. Ordinarily, he was so level-headed. Timo wasn't the kind to get such ridiculous ideas like taking a roadtrip to who-knows-where when it was hardly the ideal season and she would be back to work any day now.

Does this have anything to do with the news? The question was on the tip of her tongue. It was true that there were some very worrying things being said on the radio, and on the internet, and in the village.
People were whispering about deaths. Where? In the capital? And so-and-so had heard that someone over in Mikkeli had come down with the illness, did you hear? And the television, well, the news feeds had an increasingly tense and desperate tone, and she hadn't heard the like for quite a long time.

The district order to temporarily close the schools had been unsurprising, but troubling. Overall, the logic was sound: there probably was nothing to worry about, but one couldn't be too careful, and it would ease the minds of parents, many of whom were at home as several non-essential services had reduced hours or closed. In her little village, many people were opting to stay home, and keeping their children with them. The last few days before closure had seen incredibly sparse school attendance.

Even Jouko Kuikka, to Vuokko's great surprise, had reduced his store's hours and kept his daughter Oona home from school.

That certainly made it difficult to ignore the disturbing rumours – among other things.

There was, she recalled, perfectly fine cell phone reception at the cabin. Surely this little episode of hysteria would be brought under control very soon, and when it did, she would receive notice from the district that her school would reopen, and that would be that.

Very well, then.

"Make sure that Lumi brings her schoolbooks with her," Vuokko said. She did not comment on the relieved-sounding sigh she heard from the other end of the phone. "And when I receive the call to return, you are going to drive all of us right back home."

This will all be over in a week or two, she thought.

Of course it will.
