Plant your hope in my garden

Sunlight skims the mountaintops.
After those cold months
you stop
stand in front of our door
let the warmth bend
to kiss your bearded face.
We made it through
tucked in this little pocket
behind our fences and
washed-out road
ragged and rough
thin-faced and alive.

Yesterday I saw white flowers
peeking through brown grasses.
They're pushing their luck
rushing and over-eager
but I can't hold it against them.
I sweep out the kitchen,
count our seed packets
and spread them out
on the yellow tablecloth.
So much hope pressed
between folded paper.

Our home is rough and cold and rocky
too far north, too harsh, they used to say.
But I know with care
you can coax life from it.

Turn the earth with me when it's warm enough.
We'll keep on going if nature allows us.
