Niagara [Original Poetry]

Title: Niagara
Rating: 0+
Length: 20 lines
Notes: Sometimes it's important to remember the beginning rather than the end.

Niagara

We walked a long way in that bright summer light
and I stared at the maples, which I'd never seen.
The air was wet and sticking
so thick you could slice it
more than my northern lungs could handle.

The falls threw spray into the air.
We watched like newlyweds
standing closer than is decent
hands linked together, our cheeks touching.
The mist was soft on our faces.

You were the noise, the flashing lights, the music
jumping from spot to spot in time with the game
and I stood aside and watched
uncomfortable in my skin.
Well-bred young men don't go to arcades.

I'll try not to let it slip through my fingers
not gripping at our sharp winter's end
but that one golden summer's week
when plum candies melted in my mouth
and the falls roared our beginning.
