Helping Hand
He was lost. She could tell.
Circling again through a path he had just taken. Pulling out his compass, checking it once again.
She watched from the tree's shadows, listening.
It would be dark soon.
She could smell his fear.
So could everything else. Those things. The horrible things. Not-human things.
When he stopped, and asked for help in a voice that was almost a sob, her name on his lips, she decided.
Ribbons of light sped out into the rapidly dimming night. Cobweb-thin, and just enough to see by.
She watched him run, and heard his breathless, whispered thanks.
