Friendship means secrets
Walk. Don't run.
Tuomi put up his hood, ducked his head a bit, and kept going.
His boots crunched the snow as he made his way quickly down the street. He turned onto the trail that led through the park, and then out into a footpath through the woods. More snow had fallen overnight, and it hadn't yet been packed down by people taking forest walks.
In fact, his footprints were the only ones there.
The only human footprints, anyway.
"Where are you going?" his mom had asked as he was pulling on his coat and heading toward the door.
"Out," Tuomi said. Then added, because he knew she would ask, "To see a friend."
"Which friend?"
"I'll be back in time for supper," he said, pushing his way out the door, pretending not to hear her.
There was no way in hell he was going to actually answer that. Because – well, how could he explain?
"Oh, yeah, I'm going to meet up with this guy I know. Except, uh, well, no, actually it isn't somebody from school, and –"
No way. There would be too many questions.
Better to keep it secret.
When he was deep enough into the woods, far enough down the trail that nobody from the park was likely to hear him, Tuomi started to sing.
It wasn't just because he felt like it. It was so his friend would know that he was coming. They'd decided on that – or, well, he'd suggested it, and his friend hadn't objected. It felt good to know they had some kind of signal, some way to keep their secret safe, even if there was no chance that anybody would find them out, because nobody would believe the truth anyway.
He turned onto a path that was little more than a deer trail. The snow was soft and loose there, but he kept going. And all the while, he kept singing.
Eventually, there was the frozen-over stream, and there was the fallen tree, and there was his friend, sitting and waiting for him.
Tuomi brushed the snow off the tree and sat down.
"Hi," he said, as he shrugged off his backpack and opened it. "It's good to see you."
His friend didn't say anything; just plunked down near his feet, and looked up at him, head tilted a bit, nose twitching. All the questions that he didn't ask were there on his face, and somehow Tuomi could understand them anyway.
"Sorry I'm late," Tuomi said. He slipped off his gloves, then pulled a carrot out of his backpack, snapping it in half. He offered the larger half to the hare, and kept the rest for himself. "I didn't have an easy time getting out of the house. Mom kept bugging me about stupid stuff, you know?"
Even though they'd been meeting like this for a while now, his mother still hadn't noticed where all of the carrots were going.
If he had his way, she wouldn't figure it out.
