Raspberries
You came to me last night
not the way you left
but the way I'd like to see you
flushed with life at the cheeks.
With flowers on your head
dressed in fine clothing
smiling broad as anything
you took my hand.
We ran through a field
grass springy under our feet
petals scattering
white as snow in our wake.
Under the clear sky I
fed you raspberries
and kissed your mouth
stained red and grinning.
The cold morning
brings emptiness
the sharp ache of your absence
and not a single berry in sight.
