Title: Good company
Fandom: Year in Hereafter
Characters/Pairing: Jaakko & Veeti
Rating: 0+
Length: 400 words
Summary: Having him around isn't that bad. Not really.
Other: If I remember right, I wrote this before the extra Sweets chapter was released. For a while I was thinking about adding something related to that, but... nah.
Good company
The rain still falls outside, but inside, it's warm as anything.
Quiet words and tired eyes, still exhausted-looking after all that, even if Veeti's done nothing but sleep since he got here. Jaakko sets coffee down in front of him, deciding not to comment on it.
Veeti looks better now that he's cleaned himself up. Washing off and a change of clothes did him some good. Soft thanks as he takes up the mug, and a grimace at how bitter it is.
Likes his coffee sweet, does he now? Well, sugar doesn't come cheap. He'll have to live with it.
The rain outside is steady, steady. Jaakko breathes in and watches it, standing dry under the overhang, smoke coiling upward in the cold air.
How many more days?
Just a few. If things go right. And then this guest will be someone else's problem.
Not that he's a problem. Not exactly. But –
The door opens. Footfalls on the wood. There he is, the blanket still wrapped around him. Veeti looks out at the rain, then looks at Jaakko.
Fresh air. Right. Well, couldn't hurt.
'S fine, Jaakko says. I don't mind the company.
And he realizes, then, that he doesn't.
Jaakko sees him looking outside the window after supper. Standing there, watching the rain with those tired eyes. His reflection is pale and ghostly in the window.
Veeti lifts his eyes, catches Jaakko watching him.
There's something vulnerable in the way he looks. The way his hair falls to frame his face. That quilt wrapped around his shoulders.
They'll be back soon enough, Jaakko says. Even if he doesn't know for sure how much longer it'll be. Even if it's empty reassurance. By the look on his face, he knows this.
He just can't stand seeing him looking so lost.
The corpse might be awake, but that's no reason not to go about the day as he usually would, as far as Jaakko is concerned.
At least his "guest" is willing to stay put.
When he returns, Jaakko finds him curled up in the chair, a book hanging loosely from his fingers. Dozed off, by the look of it. Out cold.
Well.
Jaakko takes the book from him – easy does it now – and looks at him for a moment.
Then he gets the quilt, and carefully drapes it over him.
When Veeti wakes, it'll be to the scent of coffee.
