The great frost
The winter had been cold. Enough to freeze the lungs. Enough to make his teeth ache.
Spring wasn't much better. Strangers in an even stranger land. Half the force they'd expected. So far from home that "home" might as well be on the moon.
And for what? What had they gained?
In the king's tent, Sweden looked to his leader, who sat bent over plans, notes, maps.
He watched. Didn't say anything. He knew by now that this one didn't take suggestions well.
His bones ached, his ears throbbing with the groans of his men.
Somewhere, Russia waited for him.
