North once more
The sea pushed cool, salty air toward Tromsø. Its harbour buzzed, ships and water-landing planes pouring in from everywhere. This was big news, this was a rescue mission, this was –
"Nobody's expecting you to go."
Norway looked at his companion. Waited for him to reply. To say anything.
Nothing came from the man with the beak-like nose and tired eyes. He stood silently, hands in his pockets, contemplating the Latham 47 biplane squatting in the water.
"I know," Amundsen said eventually. That was all.
And you're going anyway, Norway thought. For what?
The 'good luck' stayed on his tongue, unsaid.
