Confession
I love you.
Roberto's words were soft, quiet, shaking. As if he had never said anything more terrifying in his life, and never would again. As if the act of admitting it was a confession.
At the time, Hiraga's reply had been delighted, but a bit baffled. "Of course! I know." In fact, he was surprised that Roberto had thought to tell him at all, because as far as Hiraga was concerned, Roberto's love for him was as obvious as the blue that God had graced the sky with: it was there for everyone to see. He had known it without Roberto having to say a single word of it, because his love came through in everything he did, every single word he spoke.
Roberto had tried to explain himself, but Hiraga silenced his protests with a kiss. There was no need to clarify anything; he was very firm about that. He knew that Roberto meant it in an earthly way: that it was romantic devotion in addition to the friendship that they already shared. Hiraga saw no issue with this. There were certain matters that were beyond the two of them but love was not one of them.
It was very simple, Hiraga thought.
Apparently, the matter was not so uncomplicated for Roberto.
They had kissed again, and again; Hiraga wouldn't let him stop. It was all out of a desire to make Roberto understand – and if Hiraga's words and his acceptance of the confession were not enough, then perhaps actions were what was needed in this situation.
For the night, at least, it was sufficient.
They fell asleep wrapped in one another's arms.
Hiraga woke alone, with sunlight bright in his eyes and warm on his face. He rose and went to the kitchen, where he found Roberto preparing to make breakfast.
"Good morning." Roberto offered him a smile. "I was just about to wake you. Did you sleep w-"
Even Hiraga, who would readily admit that now and then he had difficulty understanding the subtleties of human expression, could see that Roberto looked nervous. So he went to him, taking his hands in his own before Roberto could finish speaking.
"I did," he said. "Thank you." And he squeezed Roberto's hands, hoping to reassure him.
"I'm sorry about last night," Roberto continued, hardly looking reassured at all. "I don't know what I was thinking."
"That's all right. Say it again, please?"
"What?"
"'I love you'. Say it again?"
"I... love you, Hiraga." The words were hesitant, worried, but as earnest as they ever were.
"It sounds as lovely now as it did last night." Hiraga went up on his toes to kiss Roberto's cheek. "So there's no need to worry about anything. I feel the same way - I'm surprised you didn't already know! Now, what's for breakfast?"
Instead of replying, Roberto wrapped his arms around him, laughing in a way that sounded partly happy and mostly relieved. Hiraga leaned against him, smiling as Roberto said something about being glad that it looked like nothing would change.
Oh, Roberto, Roberto, Hiraga thought as he slid his arms around him and held him tight. Of course not. Why could anything change about their relationship? How could it, if this entire time they had already been on the same page?
And if it did change, it could only change for the better.
