Friday Afternoon In DC

It was a cool autumn day in Washington, D.C. A light breeze blew, jostling from the trees the bright leaves which had only recently turned their colours. In the parks people milled about at their leisure, enjoying the light and the fresh afternoon. Two young men walked arm-in-arm, and the excited outbursts from the shorter of the two occasionally attracted the attention of passers-by.

“Oh my god Liet, who’s that?”

“Hmm?”

Lithuania turned his head, his eyes following the direction his friend had gestured. It wasn’t the first time it had happened over the course of the day; at that point, he was fully used to Poland grabbing him and flailing, ordering him to look at something, or in this case, someone. Of course, when he had offered to take him along on his tour of the United States, as suggested by his dear old friend America, he had fully expected that Poland’s behaviour would be something of the sort. Naturally, as he predicted, his dear blonde companion was a bit like a five-year-old, distracted by something or other every five seconds.

This time, however, it was slightly different.

“I can’t see – calm down, honestly, you’re squirming – who are you pointing to?”

“That guy!”

Who?”

“Ugh, you’re like totally blind. The hot one, in the red shirt. Over there, on the bench, see? I know I should know him but I can’t remember!”

It was then that Lithuania saw who Poland was referring to. “Oh, that’s Canada,” he said, shrugging. “And don’t point. It’s rude.”

Obediently, Poland stopped, and clung to Lithuania’s arm instead. “Canada. America’s brother. Right! I remember now.” Perching his head on his friend’s shoulder, he oggled freely, not caring if any passers-by happened to see. “He’s a whole lot hotter than America though. Mmmm... more rugged.”

“He is handsome,” Lithuania admitted, glancing at his friend and trying not to be too disturbed by the fact that Poland was practically drooling. “Eugh, Poland, do you mind—“

“What?”

“... Never mind.” Lithuania sighed. As he considered how to distract his friend, an idea popped into his head. How simple. “You know,” he said, nudging Poland in the ribs, “If you’re so taken with him, maybe you should go talk to him.”
“What?” Poland finally dragged his gaze away and stared at Lithuania instead, as if his companion had two heads, eyes widening. “Oh no. No way.”

“Why not? It’s Canada. He doesn’t bite-“

“Yeah, I mean no, I mean I know he doesn’t, but I just can’t.”

“Sure you can.”

“No, like, seriously. Come on, you know how I am with – I mean, I just – damn it, Liet, I just can’t!”

“Oh, stop being silly. Come on, we’ll go together.” And without further ado Lithuania grabbed hold of Poland’s hand and began dragging him along in spite of his friend’s protests. He smiled broadly, feeling gleefully wicked. He knew full well what he was about to put the blonde through; Poland was, after all, quite shy around people he didn’t know well, to the extent that generally, he would try to hide if possible. But damnit, seeing Poland flustered would be well worth the embarrassment of being in his company, as well as the tongue-lashing he would surely receive later.

“Canada! Hello!”

The bespectacled nation looked up from his newspaper and smiled broadly upon seeing the familiar face. “Lithuania! It’s been a while. Oh, and Poland, too? Good to see you.” His smile became even wider upon catching sight of Lithuania’s companion, who at that moment was desperately glancing about for a place to hide, though he tried to make it look as if he wasn’t.

“H-hi,” said Poland, peeking out from behind Lithuania’s shoulder. “U-um. Good to see you too?”

If Canada was baffled by the blonde’s behaviour, politeness motivated him to hide his confusion, and he proceeded as if it was perfectly ordinary for someone to hide behind their companion upon being greeted by a friendly nation. “So, what are you two doing in this part of the world?”

“Oh, you know, just playing tourist,” Lithuania replied brightly, acting as if he was completely ignorant to the fact that Poland was clinging to him and hissing in his ear in a failed attempt to persuade him to leave oh-my-god-right-now. “Your brother invited us. What are you doing here?”

“I’m just down here for today on business – heading back this afternoon to Ottawa, otherwise I would love to meet up with you again. Say, if you two are planning to stick around a while, I will be in Halifax next week – how about you two cross the border and visit me there? Nova Scotia is lovely this time of yea-“

“HEY LOOK, a distraction!”

“Huh?” Two heads jerked toward where Poland had pointed, and like a shot the blonde was off, running in the opposite direction as fast as his legs could carry him.

“Wait, there’s nothing... oh.” And this time, Canada was completely incapable of hiding his bafflement, brows knitting as he contemplated the most polite way to inquire as to what on earth was going on.

Lithuania, on the other hand, continued as if nothing had happened, though it was all he could do to keep his laughter in. “It sounds like a great idea,” he said, flashing a wide smile at the Canadian.

“What? ...Oh, right. So, you’ll give me a call, eh?”

“Of course.”

“Right...” The taller man paused, then shifted, an uncertain expression crossing his face. “Er, Lithuania...” Leaning down, he murmured by the dark-haired nation’s ear, “Uh, your friend... is he all right?”
“Oh, no. He’s just – I mean, he’s kind of – well, he’s just Poland.” And that seemed to explain everything.

Lithuania headed off in the direction Poland had taken, hands in his pockets, humming lightly to himself. Well, his plot to get revenge succeeded, with the added bonus of a promised trip to Nova Scotia. Perhaps for that he could thank Pol-

“You big jerk!”

Something – or rather, someone – tackled him, and he fell to the ground. Flailing a little and rolling about on the grass in an attempt to get out from beneath his attacker, Lithuania got a few good blows in before he realized – Oh. Poland. “What the hell!” After a moment of struggling, he managed to squirm out from underneath and pin his friend, holding him down against the grass by the wrists to restrain him. “Okay, what on earth is the matter with you?!”

“Ugh, you’re like a total dick, you know that?” Poland squirmed and tugged, gritting his teeth, but try though he might, he couldn’t break out of Lithuania’s hold. “Why’d you have to g’wan and drag me over there? You know how nervous I get around people I don’t know!”

“Yes, but you won’t get to know people better if you don’t talk to them – or if you just hide behind me when you do, for that matter.” Lithuania tsked a bit, then smiled slightly, completely ignoring his friend’s fruitless struggles to get out from his strong grip. “We’ll work on that, right? I’m sure by the time our visit with Canada is through, you won’t be shy around him, at least.”

“Oh my god Liet, you didn’t... Oh god. You totally did.”

“Hm?”

“You said yes. Argh!” Letting out a frustrated sound of defeat, Poland set his head forcefully against the grass and rolled his eyes skyward, refusing to look Lithuania in the eye.

“I did. It was so kind of him to offer.”

“... This is revenge for me drooling on you, isn’t it.”

“Whatever gave you that idea?” Feigning innocence, Lithuania finally released the blonde and, with a content sigh, flopped down on the grass beside him. “Don’t worry, Poland,” he said, stretching his arms, relaxed as a cat in the sun. “It will be all right, I’m certain. Canada’s such a nice boy – and besides, I think he likes you.”

“Okay, now you’re just totally bullshitting.”

“No, no. He did smile brighter when he saw that you were with me, didn’t he?”

“Well... yeah.”

Though he couldn’t see him, Lithuania was sure his friend was blushing. “There you are, then. And don’t forget, I’ll be with you in Halifax, so if you do feel the need to hide behind something, you can hide behind me. As usual. Though I don’t see why you’d want to. He’s sweet, and – how did you put it? ‘Like, totally hot’?”

“Oh, stop it.” Pause. “And he totally is.”

“Totally.”
