A phone call on a summer evening

Can I ring you?

Even though they had been texting back and forth for half an hour, it felt presumptuous to ask. But Romania's reply - Yes! - was instantaneous.

Norway called him.

Romania's greeting was cheerful, light. "What, you wanted to hear my voice?"

It was easy to picture him, teasing like that. Wide smile. Warm, expressive eyes. Norway wished, for a moment, that he'd opted for a video call. Then he put the thought away. Impractical.

"I did," he admitted. There was no reason not to be straightforward about it. "But I also wanted my hands free."

"Cooking dinner?"

"Mmhm."

"Okay! I'll keep you company."

From Romania's side, Norway could hear street noise. Vehicles. Norway pictured him out on his balcony in the golden summer light. "How's Bucharest?"

A laugh. "Bucharest is Bucharest." But that was enough to get him talking.

Norway let him go on. Peeled potatoes and listened, phone pressed between shoulder and ear, as Romania told him all the goings-on. Norway gave soft sounds of acknowledgement, and let him speak, drinking in the sound of his voice.

The words themselves weren't the point.

It would be better to be close. To work together, make dinner as a pair, side by side at the counter. Share the table between them later on, feet brushing underneath it. No phone. No distance.

This would have to do.

The talk wore down, eventually. A moment's pause. Companionable silence, but better under other circumstances. There was a long, thoughtful exhale from the other end. Cigarette, Norway thought. Imagined long fingers flicking ash, Romania glancing skyward thoughtfully before taking another drag.

"So," Romania said. "Any plans?"

"Plans?" Norway asked.

"Y'know, for summer." That audible smile again. "I know you usually take time off to go somewhere. Right?"

Norway smiled. Romania was fishing, and clearly didn't give a damn about how obvious it was that he was doing it. "I've arranged the time," he replied. "No plans yet, mind you."

"Well, you could always come down here."

Bucharest. Norway considered it. It was a city like any other. Busy. Too many people. Stiflingly hot at this time of year. But. Romania. Norway hadn't seen him in months. He thought of soft hair slipping through his fingers. Teeth sharp against his lower lip as they kissed. Tumbling into bed together, sauced on plum brandy.

It would be worth it to see him.

Romania spoke again. "We could go to the mountains to cool off, if -"

"Yes." The word spilled from Norway's mouth before Romania had even finished his sentence. Ears suddenly hot, Norway cleared his throat, glad – if only for the moment – that Romania couldn't see him. "I – yes. That sounds good."

"Oh, does it?" Romania's voice was a sly drawl. Norway could picture that familiar smug grin, the sort he disliked on anyone else but found so appealing on him. He'd been leading Norway along, it was clear, knowing he'd get the response he wanted. Of course he had. "So, I can look forward to you gracing me with your presence?"

Norway snorted. "I'll send you my schedule."

"All right." Another quiet moment. Another pause. Norway imagined him. Cigarette smoke drifting up in the still air. Dark brows knitted slightly in thought, tongue sweeping over his lip as he considered his next words. "I'll look forward to seeing you," Romania said finally.

"I know," Norway said. The words came more softly than he meant them to. He leaned against the kitchen counter. Closed his eyes. Remembered how it felt to press his face to Romania's hair. Knew it wouldn't be long before he could do feel that again. "...I will, too."
