Morning, December 02
The morning light was far too bright. Bulgaria shut his eyes tight, hoping to get back to sleep, but it was a losing battle. He was fully awake.
Beside him, Romania was dead to the world, his breathing slow and steady and deep. It'd be a shame to disturb him.
Bleary-eyed and yawning, Bulgaria retrieved his boxers from where they'd been tossed on the floor the previous night. After slipping them on and throwing Romania's housecoat over his shoulders, he tiptoed out of the room as quietly as he could.
The living room was as they'd left it, an untidy mess of discards from the night before. He picked up the bottles from the coffee table and tucked the empty chocolate box under his arm. A hazy memory surfaced: Romania pressing a chocolate to his lips.
"Here, you can have the last one."
"But -"
"I'd like you to have it." Warm mouth by his ear. Sharp teeth tugging playfully at his earlobe. "You're sweet for coming to see me tonight. Sweets for the sweet, right?"
Bulgaria was sure they'd both been well on their way to drunk by that point, but that didn't mean he didn't appreciate Romania's sappy nonsense.
He brought the rubbish and recycling into the kitchen and sorted it into the right places, as he had done a thousand times before. Then he paused by the window, looking out at the December morning. It was very sunny, and he realized that it must be pretty late; they'd slept in a long time.
Another memory from the night before eased into his mind. Romania cupping his face, kissing him hard. Toying with the buttons on his shirt. "You're planning to stay the night, right?"
"Uhh..." As if there was any question. "Yes?"
"Okay." Then Romania grinned, his eyes bright, cheeks flushed. "Then we should go to the bedroom, right? So you can give me the rest of my birthday present."
Well.
Bulgaria flushed, and tried to think about something else. Thoughts of the previous night were all well and good, but with Romania still asleep, there wasn't any point letting his mind linger too much on that particular distraction.
For a moment, he considered making breakfast for the two of them. With anyone else, he wouldn't feel comfortable enough even entertaining the option. But this was Romania, and Bulgaria knew what he liked – and he also knew Romania's kitchen almost as well as his own. It wouldn't be hard to throw something together.
In the end, he decided that would be overkill. Instead, he put the coffee on, then filled a glass with water and went back to the bedroom.
At the sound of Bulgaria entering, Romania stirred.
"Mm... Good morning," came a soft mumble from the bed. "You're awake?"
"Yeah." Bulgaria sank down onto Romania's side of the bed, offering him the glass. "How's your head?"
"Not bad" Romania smiled. "You?"
"I'm okay." More than okay, if Bulgaria was to be honest with himself. He watched as Romania sat up and drank deep, then set the glass on the bedside table with a sigh so content, it was as if everything was right in the world.
A strand of hair fell across Romania's cheek. After hesitating for a moment, Bulgaria reached out to tuck it behind his ear. His breath caught as Romania tilted his head to nuzzle at his hand.
"Do I smell coffee?" A smile spread over Romania's lips as he met Bulgaria's eyes. "I don't know where I'd be without you."
Warmth spread across Bulgaria's cheeks. "I think you're still asleep," he said.
"I'm not either! But if you think I am, then you should get back into bed with me, right?"
"Ah -" Bulgaria cleared his throat. "Well, I don't know. I wasn't sure if you needed to be up." A glance at the clock on the bedside table confirmed his suspicions. Ten in the morning. "Was there anything you needed to do this morning?"
Romania followed his gaze, then shrugged. "On the morning after my birthday? Nah. I doubt anybody's expecting to see much of me today." Then he paused, brows drawing together as he thought of something. "Do you need to be back at your place? I wouldn't want to keep you if -"
"No, no. I don't think anybody will be looking for me, either." Bulgaria could feel himself blushing again as Romania looked at him, head tilted as if he was trying to figure something out but just wasn't quite awake enough to do that yet.
Finally, a grin spread over Romania's face. "Wait. You planned this, right?" he said. "Staying over and all that."
"I, uh...." Bulgaria's tongue stuck in his mouth as he fumbled to find the right words. It was one thing to plan, and carefully consider his options, and to hope that Romania would want him to stay both the night and the day after – but it was another thing to actually admit that he'd been hoping for all of it. "Well, I might have arranged to have the day free," he admitted finally. "Just in case, you know?"
Before he could get another word out, Romania reached up and pulled him close.
It was a tight hug, with Romania's grip on him firm, face pressed against his shoulder and fingers sunk into his hair. "I knew it! You're so thoughtful..."
"And you're still drunk," Bulgaria protested, not minding in the least.
"I am not." A tighter squeeze. "I'm just glad you're here." Then Romania drew away, holding Bulgaria at arm's length as he smiled widely, cheeks flushed pink. "Really. Now... let's get some of that coffee. And since you can stay as long as you want, we don't have to rush anything! Okay?"
"Okay." Bulgaia leaned in close, kissing Romania's cheek.
Everything had turned out the way he'd hoped it would. And by the sound of it, Romania had known all along that he'd been plotting something.
Somehow, that made it even better.
