Take it slow
Romania blinked his eyes open and yawned. Thin sunlight spilled into the room, hitting him in the face.
The other side of the bed was cold.
Reluctantly, he slid out from under the covers and pulled on some clothes. He wouldn't have minded staying in bed for a while longer, but not if he was going to be there alone.
Bulgaria was exactly as Romania had expected him to be: in the kitchen, preparing the percolator to make coffee. He had Romania's bathrobe thrown over his shoulders, his hair mussed from sleep.
"G'morning," Romania mumbled as he slid his arms around Bulgaria's waist, resting his head against his shoulder.
"Oh, you're awake!" was Bulgaria's bright reply.
It's way too early to sound so cheerful, Romania thought. "A little." He yawned. "Not very awake, though." He tightened his hold, nuzzling a little. Bulgaria was warm, the moment was close, and comfortable, and quiet.
"What would you like for breakfast?" Bulgaria asked, leaning back into Romania's arms. "I have a few ideas, but..."
"It's funny that you always ask this," Romania said. His lips broadened into a smile. "Since it's my kitchen."
"I, ah – well." Heat crept up Bulgaria's neck. He paused, tensing as if not sure what to say about that. "You don't mind, do you?"
Sweet, Romania thought. "Nah." He grinned. "What, you think I'd object to something like that?"
Bulgaria let out a soft laugh, and his hand moved to cover Romania's, squeezing gently. "I guess not," he said, the uncertainty gone, ease slipping back into his voice. "Since you never did before."
Of course I wouldn't, Romania thought. The first morning that Bulgaria had offered after staying overnight had been a surprise – but only the first time. It hadn't taken Romania long to realize that it was just an affectionate quirk of his.
"You can do anything you want. I don't mind a bit." Romania lifted his head just enough to speak by his ear, lips brushing. "Or we could go back to bed, y'know. For a while."
Bulgaria sucked in a breath, shivering from the contact. "Back to bed?"
"But not to sleep," Romania clarified, unable to keep the smirk out of his voice.
A soft exhale. Almost a laugh. "Of course not," Bulgaria said. Then he turned, sliding out of Romania's arms, taking his hand to lead him to the bedroom, eyes bright.
Breakfast could wait.
