Interment [Sweden/Norway]

Title: Interment
Fandom: Hetalia
Characters/Pairing: Sweden/Norway
Rating: 18+. Warning is CNTW
Length: 500 words
Summary: Norway has been trapped by Sweden more than once. Sometimes, it gives an opportunity to learn useful things. Sometimes, it doesn't. (Time period ambiguous; I had 17th century in mind, but that's pretty broad.)
Other: The prompt for this was "Fucked in the grave you were forced to dig yourself".

Interment

It wasn't the first time he'd been caught. Norway had fallen into Sweden's hands more than once. Sweden always doled out revenge - sometimes had him executed if he didn't manage to escape first.

Occasionally, there were things that could be learned from within imprisonment that made it worth the trouble. Even if it meant ultimately dying for it.

He'd been tied and led out into the woods. Thought he knew what was coming. Expected a pistol, or even a stab in the back. But then his bonds were cut, and the rest was more surprising.

Norway looked down at the shovel he'd been handed.

He glanced up at Sweden, head tilted to the side, wondering if he'd heard him correctly.

"Dig," Sweden said again. Pointed to the ground to make it clear.

This was new.

For a moment, he stared at Sweden, wondering if there was more to this. Then he dropped his gaze, and dug.

Hand on the back of his head. Earth in his mouth. Another hand gripping his wrists, wrenching them back, strong.

Norway closed his eyes. Didn't struggle. Let it come. Tried not to choke on the dirt as he forced him down and entered him.

What after that? Would he be hauled up and out of the hole he'd been forced to dig? Or would he be beaten senseless and left there, violated and weak, until finally he found the strength to crawl out of it himself?

Norway thought of clawing his way up and out, and hoped it wouldn't come to that.

He endured it. What else could he do? He endured the dirt in his mouth, the rough grip of Sweden's fingers in his hair. The pain of Sweden inside of him.

Norway shut his eyes tight, went outside himself, and waited for it to end.

When Sweden finished, Norway took a moment to breathe. Moved to fix his clothing, cover himself, stand, but Sweden gripped him by the hair and forced him to stop.

The blow came before Norway realized what was happening.

He came to a moment later. On his back. Vision blurry.

Something fell down on him from above. Then more. Soil.

Norway closed his eyes. Touched his face. Touched the back of his head, and felt it give. Swallowed hard as another load of dirt was thrown into the pit.

Grave, he reminded himself. The grave.

It seemed the blow to the head that he'd received had been the first of many. He couldn't feel his lower body. Sluggishly, Norway lifted his head. Felt dirt on him again.

Looked up.

A figure was there at the edge of the grave. Blurry. Norway blinked, tried to focus.

Sweden. Moving to toss another load in. He paused, and their eyes met. Norway parted his lips, swept a dirt-dry tongue over them. Tried to speak.

Sweden didn't let him say anything. Just heaved another load into the grave. Only once did he glance at Norway.

Then, without a word, he continued.

Ahahahahahahaha did not expect the prompt to be absolutely literal, and I loved this for it. Just the other day, I was telling my best friend: "hey this fandom should really make Sweden darker and edgier, you know?" Then I came across this fic. I really enjoyed your interpretation of Sweden during 17th-ish century, fittingly ruthless for such an aggressive, expansionist empire. It's a joy to read about characters taking on such different personalities in time periods The Fandom doesn't portray them a lot in.

I wish I have the words to talk about how I felt about Norway in this fic. (I love it, obviously.) For historical!Norway, there seems to be some shared elements in how people portray him from 19th onward or during the viking age, but everyone is doing something different about Norway, say, during Denmark-Norway. Which would make sense, since information specific to Norway during this time period isn't all that unambiguous or easy to find. I like how in your historical AU fics, Norway seems to be really cognizant of the kind of situation he is in, of the concessions he must make to Make the Best Of A Situation, and all the while still trying to maintain some sort of integrity to himself? I feel like I would really be convinced by this sort of characterization, and how Norway in a later time period might look back upon What Had Happened during the earlier time periods.

I hope I'm not coming off as rude for perhaps overanalyzing a bit, ahhhh ((( Just wanting you to know that this fic gave me a lot of Feels and made my day/week/month. Thank you!!

No worries, ha, I appreciate hearing your thoughts! (Lol when I saw this prompt I was like, "I absolutely must get literal with this")

Sweden sure does make a convenient dark force. It's pretty fun to write him like that, though I don't do it often. I think partly there's a worry about being too over-the-top about it, because if you push it in a certain direction, it can go from "dark and compelling" to "cartoonishly evil". But for something small-scope like this, I wasn't going to get fussed over it.

This wasn't meant to be alternate-history, just vaguely compliant with real-world timeline as always, so I'm curious, what makes it come off as alternate universe?

AH I didn't mean "historical AU" as in actual alternate history, I just kind of meant it as roughly "it's not modern times and anon didn't cover this part of our real-world timeline." I wasn't really sure how people call this subset of hetalia fanworks and discussions—is historical hetalia what people say?

Ohhh okay! I usually think of "historical AU" as alt-history or like, those things where it's historical setting but everyone is human, haa. Though I think I've seen some people use it the way you do too.

I usually just say "hetalia fic with historical setting" or "fic with (insert century here) setting". Though if I was uploading it to Ao3, I guess I'd tag it as historical Hetalia, yeah! :Va (but I rarely know what the rest of the fandom is doing, so don't take my habits as evidence of a consensus on anything, pff.)

<3 <3 Glad you enjoyed it. :)

It was meant to be a restricted format exercise, which might be partly why it has a poetic effect, maybe! :V
